Citizens need accurate information to make sound decisions. Debunking misleading claims and deciphering the often confusing numbers is crucial to this process. PesaCheck is here to help.

Pesa is a Kiswahili word meaning money. Combined, PesaCheck literally means check money. With this in mind, PesaCheck is Africa's largest indigenous fact-checking organisation to verify the financial and other statistical numbers quoted across 15 African countries in East Africa. It uses data to check the accuracy of public statements by government, the media, and other public figures to ensure that citizens have the best possible information for decision-making. Using very clear graphics and understandable content, they attempts to limit the spread of misinformation.

PesaCheck is supported by International Budget Partnership and Code for Africa (Africa’s Largest Civic Technology + Data Journalism Initiative) affiliates in Kenya, Tanzania & Uganda, with a focus on key development areas.
These include:
Health / Welfare
Water / Sanitation
Education
Rural Development

About PesaCheck: PesaCheck was co-founded by Catherine Gicheru and Justin Arenstein, and is being incubated by the continent’s largest civic technology and data journalism accelerator: Code for Africa. It seeks to help the public separate fact from fiction in public pronouncements about the numbers that shape our world, with a special emphasis on pronouncements about public finances that shape government’s delivery of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) public services, such as healthcare, rural development and access to water / sanitation.
